Firefox in the News

Firefox has been able to break back into the news this week, notably today with an announcements that the 2 billion mark has been passed in terms of Add-On downloads. You might be at liberty to ask, “how many are still actually in use?”, but those figures are not readily available!

It might be argued that Firefox has lost some ground in recent months to both Chrome and Opera, with the later having gained some extra credibility with an iPhone app. Well, Firefox has not missed that, and now has submitted its Firefox Home to the Apple App Store for approval.

The iPhone version will certainly come into its own if you Sync history and bookmark information between desktop and phone browsers.

Kin and Gone

Microsoft’s Kin phone has bitten the dust already. The Kin One and Kin Two products, which were to be aimed at a teenage audience, will not see the light of day says Engadget. Suggestions are that more in-fighting and power-struggles at Microsoft are probably as much to blame as anything.

Can’t help but wonder why Microsoft thinks it has to be involved in every technology with a lack of real connected thoughts to link them all together. It’s getting more of a “me to” company these days, whilst innovation still comes from the likes of Apple and Google.

Chrome and Opera Top the Browser League

Two new independent browser challenges have both arrived at similar results, with Google Chrome and Opera heading the overall performance charts. Take a look at them both, because from what I can see they have both used quite different approaches to arrive at similar results, which is interesting.

The first of the challenges, noted yesterday, was conducted by the good folk at Legit Reviews, whilst a second report appeared on the e-mail news from Lifehacker.

Also interesting to note some further browser news from the US showing Chrome now overtaking Safari in the download league table, with the Google product now at number 3 in the chart.

Czech Republic Newspapers Install Self-Service Ad Software

Wave2 Media Solutions, Whitchurch, United Kingdom, has announced details of an order from Mladá fronta, Czech Republic, for its EasyBuild and AdPortal software solutions for ad creation.

Wave2 has installed its powerful Publishing Platform for automated advert building to support the AdPortal and EasyBuild implementations. AdPortal is used by advertisers as a “self-service” platform to book, build and manage their own advertisements and campaigns. The system also includes Wave2’s EasyBuild application to streamline the internal process of creating display Ads and minimise production costs. The cross media solution is capable of building adverts for both print and online delivery.

iPhone 4 Arrives: Did You Queue?

Release day for an Apple product gets everyone excited these days, and iPhone 4 was certainly going to be the latest of these frenzied occasions. Our friends at the various techie web sites have been working overtime to produce the important stories on the release of iPhone 4. Legit Mobile Reviews gives us an out of the box run through, whilst Engadget examines what you have bought into with a run through the camera technology on the phone (front facing, rear view, and video), the gyroscope, the multitasking ability, and, as it describes it, “other stuff”.

In a separate comparison, Engadget also examines the higher quality screen image on the iPhone, and compares it to what’s being delivered on the Sumsung Galaxy product.

Going back to the camera issue, another look at making movies with the iPhone, and some info on the iMovie app.

Of course, you can’t please everybody, and Mashable reports on complaints and issues with the new iPhone 4. The Guardian too features the reception issue: it is suggested that by holding the phone incorrectly the performance of the antennae can be impaired. The topic has even been the subject of a BBC radio phone in today, June 25.

From my perspective, I can’t see too many problems. It’s a good release, taking the iPhone to another level for sure, and adding features that will be the envy of other manufacturers and phone users. Not sure if it was the best idea that I have ever had to go spend five hours standing outside my local O2 shop in a very slow moving line, but then I had never done it before, so perhaps it’s just one of those things that we all need to do once in our lives. I did meet some very pleasant and interesting people while I was there, which certainly made the whole process bearable, and O2 were very human, delivering drinks and pastries at regular intervals!

Your Own Font!

Ever fancied the idea of being able to create something that looks a bit like your own “handwritten” letters on a PC? Or maybe just add that personalised touch to an e-mail, or compliment slip even? Well it seems that you can. Our chums at Lifehacker offer a couple of choices in this posting that allow you to input some sample handwriting and get back a usable font, and all for that most magical of prices. I’m off to give it a go!

iOS4 Makes All The Headlines

The release of iOS4 is certainly headline news in the technology sector today (June 22) following yesterday’s launch. Firstly, Lifehacker provides a summary of the shortcuts, features and settings you need to know. That looks like essential reading for the iPhone user. Next on my list, Mashable has a feature on how iOS4 works with the new iTunes 9.2 (with video), which is also pretty important reading/viewing. The same site also offers a review of iBooks on iOS4, which is of course one of the new features. Happy reading!
